Tom Wigley, Associate

Professor Wigley was born and educated in Australia with degrees in Mathematical Physics and training as a meteorologist with the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. He is a former Director of the Climatic Research Unit, one of the world’s foremost university-based climate centers located in the UK. He has published more than 250 papers in refereed journals and books, and is one of the world’s most highly cited scientists in his discipline. His publications span many aspects of climate science, including:

  • climate data development and analysis;
  • climate, sea level and carbon cycle modeling;
  • impacts of climate on agriculture and water resources;
  • climate model assessment and validation;
  • paleoclimate and causes of past climate variations;
  • projections of future climate and sea level change; and
  • climate policy and approaches to stabilization of the climate system.

He is the developer of the MAGICC climate model, as used in all IPCC Reports, the Stern Report, the Garnaut Report, and elsewhere. He has contributed as a convening lead author, lead author or contributing lead author to all IPCC reports to date, contributing to a total of 21 chapters in these Reports.

Professor Wigley has acted as a consultant to the U.N.D.P., the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the California Energy Commission, the Commission of the European Communities, the Electric Power Research Institute, CRIEPI, and the Pew Foundation. He is also an Associate of, and works in collaboration with CLIMsystems Ltd a leading climate impacts software firm.
