This week, our time machine takes us back to January 2019 BC (before COVID). Dr Peter Urich and our Chief Climate Scientist, Dr Yinpeng Li, visited Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar, to provide the “last big training in the field before COVID” on SimClim, our climate risk assessment, mapping, and analytical tool. They also contributed to capacity building ahead of the country’s second national communication for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
“The Myanmar Meteorological Department shared their local data with us, and were impressed at how the data in our programme, SimClim, matched!” Yinpeng recalled excitedly. The corroboration of data validated our work and its application in a world dealing with climate change.
“We helped them understand the latest climate data and how that data could support various sectors such as agriculture, forestry, water, and health, so that they could meet their obligations to the UNFCCC,” Peter explained.
